Registration for PhD Courses
Is the registration annual?
 | Yes, even when there is only a registration for the Thesis. In order to have a bond to the UC and a PhD course, the registration in the beginning of each academic year is mandatory. Only under these conditions a PhD student may benefit from the resources of the UC and the supervision of his/her thesis’ works. |
What are the registration deadlines?
 | The
usual registration deadline in 2019/2020 is the same for all the students in
the UC who registered in the previous academic year and it is usually between
the end of August and the middle of September. Nonetheless, there may be PhD
courses with specific characteristics, which may imply other deadlines. Therefore,
you should check the notice on the main webpage concerning registrations with different deadlines » |
Where do I register?
 | All
the academic procedures, including the registration to attend classes in the
academic year, are carried out at InforEstudante. The system recognises the
registration as being on a full time or part time basis, asking the PhD student
to confirm and accept his/her registration on that basis. |
What are my registration options?
 | The registration may be annual or semestral, and within each, you may choose between the full time or the part time registration in accordance with the following table: |
Registration Regime | Registration | Conditions
| % of Fees |
---|
Full time | Annual
| - Registration for more than 30ECTS, up to the registration limits established for the course.
- Registration for annual curricular units, 1st and 2nd
semester.
| 100%
|
| Semestral | - Registration for more than 15ECTS, up to half of the limits of the full time registration.
- Registration only for the 1st or for the 2nd semester.
| 50%
|
Part time | Annual | - Registration for <=30ECTS
- Registration for annual curricular units, 1st and 2nd
semester.
| 60% |
| Semestral | - Registration for <=15ECTS
- Registration only for the 1st or for the 2nd semester.
| 30% |
What is the maximum number of ECTS I can register for, on a part time basis?
 | In accordance with no. 2 of Article no.16 in the Academic Regulation, the registration on a part time basis is subject to the registration for curricular units, including the thesis, that account for: - in the academic year, up to and including 30 ECTS; in the semester up to and including 15 ECTS
|
What is a multiannual unit?
 | The Thesis is usually a multiannual curricular unit, that is, a unit whose activity covers more than an academic year. Typically, it ranges from 120 ECTS (2 academic years) to 240 ECTS (4 academic years).
|
Please note: Some PhD Courses comprise multiannual curricular units that accompany the Thesis (follow-up or supervision seminars, scientific methodology, among others).
Can I register for the Thesis on a part time basis?
How are ECTS counted in the part time registration for the Thesis?
 | The number of ECTS counted in order to obtain the minimum value after which you can deliver your Thesis and request its public defence depends on your registration every academic year:
|
Registration System
| Registration | Conditions of the registration for the Thesis
| Counted ECTS |
---|
Full Time | Annual
| - Annual registration and attendance on a full time basis
| 100 per cent of the year
|
| Semestral | - Registration and attendance only in a semester on a full time basis
| 50 por cent of the year |
Part Time | Annual | - Annual registration and attendance on a part time basis, (half of the usual time)
| 50 per cent of the year |
| Semestral | - Registration and attendance only in a semester (half of the usual time)
| 50 per cent of the semester (1/4 of the year) |
When can I deliver the Thesis?
 | After obtaining the minimum number of ECTS credits (equivalent to the minimum time to carry out the Thesis works) established in your PhD Thesis guidelines. This value depends on your registration every academic year (check the table and previous question).
|

Why choose a registration only for the 2nd
semester ?
 | The biggest advantage is related to the fact that it enables you to begin your
PhD course later in the academic year. For example, if you are waiting for the issuance
of your visa or if you have been admitted to/placed in the UC in the 3rd
or the Extraordinary Application’s Phase. In these cases you should pay attention to the date of your registration
and consider the possibility of registering only for the 2nd semester because
you will have more time to decide what to do before the tuition fee instalments are generated. |
 | For further information, please check the webpage concerning the "Registration for only one semester" » |
Why choose a registration on a part time basis?
 | Typically, students should register on a part time basis if, for any reason (for example, student-workers) they are unable to proceed their studies at the same pace as other students registered on a full time basis. Thus, they can take twice as long to accomplish the PhD course and pay lower annual fees. |
