The Forest Fire Research Centre (CEIF) is a branch of the Association for the Development of Industrial Aerodynamics (ADAI) closely connected to the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEM) of the Science and Technology Faculty of Coimbra`s University (FCTUC). CEIF-ADAI is mainly dedicated to the applied research in the field of forest fires and fires in the wildland urban interface (WUI) namely the physical aspects of the fire. Since 1990, CEIF-ADAI, with a dynamic and multidisciplinary team, has been developing its activities in order to learn, analyse, understand, apply and disseminate the knowledge developed.

The main goal of CEIF-ADAI is the promotion of scientific knowledge about the phenomena related to the occurrence and spread of wildfires in order to support the common efforts for the mitigation of their negative impacts. Additionally, fire safety is a topic where CEIF-ADAI has been investing its efforts as well. These goals are being achieved through the realization of applied research projects, trials and demonstrative projects, as well as the promotion of advanced training programs and other initiatives aiming at the sharing of information. The collaboration with several national and international organizations and the support provided by various operational institutions, companies and public institutions have been essential to the results that CEIF-ADAI has achieved in pursuit of the objectives initially set.

CEIF-ADAI Team has been receiving the recognition from national and international personalities and institutions. Among other acknowledgements, CEIF-ADAI was awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Environment with the "Batefuegos de Oro" prize in recognition of the scientific work developed in the area of forest fires. In 2017, Professor Domingos Xavier Viegas, director of CEIF, received the "IAWF Wildland Fire Safety Award", awarded by the International Association of Wildland Fire (IAWF). It is one of the most prestigious international awards for the scientific and operational community in the area of forest fires, and its attribution occurs in the years in which the Wildland Fire Safety Summit is held. Since 1997, this was the 14th prize awarded worldwide, the second being awarded in Europe.
