In the scope of the FCT funded project House-Refuge this webinar will bring together a group of insurance specialists from different countries to discuss the importance of the sector in safeguarding constructions from the devastating impacts of wildfires. Attendees will have the opportunity to understand the different policies regarding the insurance coverages in different parts of the world and the importance and potential that the insurance sector can have in developing better policies to protect buildings and communities from wildfires.

This webinar will be held in english with no simultaneous translation.

Assistant Professor at the University of Coimbra and Researcher at the Legal Institute of the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra. Research Fellow of the project "House Refuge", funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology, from February 2021 – January 2023.

With an ongoing specialization on Droit et Gestion de la Forêt at Université de Bordeaux, Karoline is also a PhD candidate in Public Law and has a master’s degree in legal-political sciences, with mention in constitutional law, both by the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra. Law degree by Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo.

Marie Scholer

Dr. Marie Scholer Mendez has joined EIOPA in April 2019. In her function as a Senior Expert on Policy Sustainable Finance, she coordinates the catastrophe expert risk group and further develops EIOPA’s work on sustainable finance. Prior to EIOPA, Ms Scholer worked for the reinsurance sector at R+V Re in Germany as a Riskcontrolling Actuary and the for insurance sector at Zurich insurance in Switzerland as a Senior Catastrophe Modeller. She has extensive knowledge in natural catastrophe models as she worked for a catastrophe model vendors (RMS) and holds a PhD in geophysics.

Miguel Almeida

Miguel Almeida is senior researcher at the Association for the Development of Industrial Aerodynamics (ADAI) where he is also a member of the Board of Directors. He is integrated member of the Associated Laboratory of Energy, Transport and Aeronautics (LAETA) and Invited Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Coimbra. Although his background is in Environmental Engineering, he has a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Coimbra, in the speciality of natural and technological risks. He is the author of several scientific publications, national and international, in the field of wildfires. Also in this field, he has participated in several research and development projects, being the Principal Investigator of the House Refuge Project, that is hosting this webinar.

Nuno Rodrigues

Nuno Rodrigues is an experienced Property & Engineering professional with a demonstrated history of working in the insurance industry, including international experience on the London Market. He joined MDS two years ago as the Director of the Property and Engineering technical Department. Before that he was the manager of the Corporate, Property and Engineering Department of Generali Portugal for 13 years.

Nuno is Graduated in Mechanical Engineering by the “Instituto Superior Técnico da Universidade de Lisboa", and Post Graduate BA in Management by IDEFE - ISEG Lisbon school of Economics and Management. Throughout its 20 years of career he attended multiple specialization courses such as Actuarial Sciences for non-Actuaries, Construction All Risks Insurance, Risk Management, Reinsurance, Environmental Liabilities, being also a Chartered Risk Surveyor by the Associação Portuguesa de Seguradores. Nuno is entitled with the Level 3 Certificate in Insurance by The Chartered Insurance Institute.

Tom Alves

Dr Tom Alves is Head of Development at the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI), Australia’s national, independent research institute for housing, homelessness, and urban research. Tom has held positions at RMIT University, The University of Melbourne, and the Office of the Victorian Government Architect. He also has worked in architectural practices in Melbourne and Sydney. With a PhD in Housing and Urban Studies, Tom has a longstanding interest in housing policy, design, and provision. He led the development of Victoria’s apartment design standards, was lead author of the housing chapter in Melbourne’s metropolitan strategic plan, and serves as a Director of MCM Housing, a specialist youth housing provider.
