Notice - Open Call for PhD Research Scholarships

The, LAETA, opens a call for applications for 1 (one) research scholarship, hereinafter referred to as PhD Research Grant, in the area of Engineering and Sustainability, under the FCT Research Grant Regulations (RBI9 and the Research Grant Holder Statute (EBI).

The scholarship will be funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under the collaboration protocol for the Financing of Research Scholarships for PhD students, signed between FCT and LAETA, the Associated Laboratory for Energy, Transport and Aeronautics, UIDP / 50022/2020.

    1. APPLICATION SUBMISSION

The competition is open from the 14th august until 23:59 (Lisbon time) on 29th august 2023.

Each applicant may submit only one application, failing which all submitted applications will be cancelled.

If candidates make false declarations or commit acts of plagiarism, their application will be cancelled, without prejudice to the adoption of other sanctioning measures.

    1. TYPE AND DURATION OF GRANTS

Doctoral research grants and intended to finance the realization by the grant holder of research activities leading to the award of a doctoral degree in Portuguese universities.

The research activities leading to the award of the doctoral degree will take place at the Association for the Development of Industrial Aerodynamics, which will be the host institution of the fellows, without prejudice to the fact that the work may be carried out in collaboration between more than one institution.

The research activities leading to the award of the doctoral degree of the selected fellows must be framed in the activity plan and strategy of the Association for the Development of Industrial Aerodynamics. The work programme may take place in full or in part at a national institution (in-country fellowship or mixed fellowship, respectively).

The duration of the scholarship is, as a rule, annual, renewable up to a maximum of four years (48 months), and no scholarship may be awarded for a period of less than 3 consecutive months.

In the case of a mixed fellowship, the period of the work plan taking place in a foreign institution cannot exceed 24 months.

    1. GRANT RECIPIENTS

The Doctoral Research Fellowships are intended for registered candidates or candidates who meet the necessary conditions to enroll in a Doctoral Programme and who wish to carry out research activities leading to the award of a doctoral degree at the Association for the Development of Industrial Aerodynamics, or at a host institution associated with it.

    1. ADMISSIBILITY
    1. Applicant eligibility requirements

Applicants can apply for this competition if they are:

      • Nationals or citizens of other European Union member states;
      • Third country nationals:
      • Stateless persons;
      • Citizens granted political refugee status.

To apply for a PhD Research Fellowship you must:

      • Be permanently and habitually resident in Portugal at the start date of the period of the work plan abroad, if the work plan proposed for the scholarship includes a period In foreign institutions (mixed scholarships), a requirement applicable to both national and foreign citizens.
      • Not to have benefited from a doctoral scholarship or a doctoral scholarship in companies directly funded by FCT, regardless of its duration.
      • Not hold a doctoral degree.
      • Have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in the scientific areas required for the competition or related areas.

    1. Admissibility requirements

The following documents must be attached to the application, failing which it will not be admitted to the competition:

      • Identity card / Citizen card / passport;
      • Curriculum vitae of the candidate;
      • Certificates of academic qualifications held, specifying the final classification and, if possible, the marks obtained in all the subjects taken, or, alternatively, a declaration of honor by the candidate that he/she has completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree by the application deadline;
      • Recognition of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions and record of the conversion of the respective final classification to the Portuguese classification scale; or, alternatively, a declaration of honor by the candidate that he/she has obtained the recognition of the foreign degree equivalent to a bachelor’s or mater’s degree with effect at the end of the application period;
      • Letter of motivation;
      • All documents must be written / submitted in Portuguese or English.

With regard to the above-mentioned admissibility requirements, the following should be noted:

      • In the case of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions, and in order to ensure the application of the principle of equal treatment to candidates holding foreign and national academic degrees, it is mandatory to recognise these degrees and convert the respective final classification to the Portuguese classification scale.

The recognition of foreign academic degrees and diplomas as well as the conversion of the final classification to the Portuguese classification scale can be requested at any public higher education institution, or at the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES, only in the case of automatic recognition). In this regard, it is suggested to consult the DGES portal at the following address: http://www.dges.gov.pt.

      • - Only candidates who have completed the study cycle leading to the Master's degree by the application deadline will be admitted. If they do not yet have a degree completion certificate, a declaration of honour will be accepted from candidates that they have completed the qualifications required for the purposes of the competition by the application deadline. The award of the scholarship is subject to the presentation, at the contractualisation stage, of proof of academic qualifications.
    1. WORK PLANS AND SCIENTIFIC ORIENTATION OF FELLOWSHIPS

The research activities leading to the award of the doctoral degree will take place at the Association for the Development of Industrial Aerodynamics, under the scientific guidance of Prof Fausto Miguel Cereja Seixas Freire and will be framed in the activity plan and strategy of the Association for the Development of Industrial Aerodynamics.

    1. EVALUATION CRITERIA
    1. Evaluation criteria

The evaluation takes into account the merit of the candidate and the knowledge of life cycle assessment (LCA) of vehicles, energy/transport systems, or related areas, preferably demonstrated through the authorship/co-authorship of scientific articles published in journals indexed in the Web of Science.

Applications considered admissible will be scored on a scale of (0-100) taking into account the following evaluation criteria:

      • Criteria A – Curricular evaluation, with a weight of 50%;

o Subcriteria A1– final classification of the master’s programme, with a weight of 15%

o Subcriteria A2 – participation in scientific projects in the field of energy and sustainability, with a weight of 15%

o Subcriteria A3– knowledge of life cycle assessment of energy/transport systems, or related areas, preferably demonstrated through authorship/co-authorship of scientific papers published in Web of Science indexed journals., with a weight of 50%

o Subcriteria A4 – Candidate’s motivation, with a weight of 20%

      • Criteria B – Interview, with a weight of 50%

o Subcriteria B1– candidate's motivation, proactivity and ability to work autonomously, with a weight of 40%

o Subcriteria B2 – knowledge of the tasks inherent in their function, with a weight of 40%

o Subcriteria B3 – Availability to start work, with a weight of 20%

Only candidates with a score above 50% in the 1st criterion will be called for the interview.

For the purposes of the decision on the award of scholarships, candidates will be ranked according to the weighted average of the classification obtained in each of the 2 criteria, translated by the following formula:
