The General Library of the University of Coimbra shows us one of its most iconic treasures

The General Library of the University of Coimbra (BGUC) holds a 12thcentury treasure inside: an “Atlantic Bible”, or “Giant Bible”, so called due to its size. On Thursday, the 2nd of June, at 6pm, BGUC will open its doors to show and tell us about this hand-painted and hand-written 12th century codex of the Atlantic Bible. These Bibles are defined by their appearance, the order of their contents and the careful decoration by medieval scribes.

Codices such as these are extremely rare and few complete copies have survived to the present day to bear witness to the evolution of the biblical text. Thus, the General Library of the UC carefully preserves this unique Bible since the 17th century, when it became part of the Library’s collection.
