The symposium “Compreender Paredes: Representações, Tessituras, Legados” is organised by the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies (CEIS20), in partnership with Coimbra City Council, the Fado Museum, and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra (FLUC), and forms part of the celebrations marking the Centenary of the Birth of Carlos Paredes. The event will take place from 13 to 14 November 2025 at the Casa da Cidadania da Língua in Coimbra.
Over the course of two days, this symposium aims to open a space for inquiry, analysis, and appreciation of the artistic, historical, political, and aesthetic complexity evoked by the creative, critical, and civic journey and the various contexts of Carlos Paredes. It also seeks to understand and give voice to some of the representations of Paredes that have emerged up to the present day. The intention is to move beyond the essentialist view of Paredes as a singular and brilliant figure, in order to gain a deeper understanding of the artistic relationships and social textures attributed to and cultivated by him, and the ways in which these have been (and continue to be) represented over time.
The symposium also seeks to promote an interdisciplinary, interdiscursive, and intergenerational dialogue among academics, artists, and the wider community, bringing together a wide range of opportunities for debate and exchange. These include scholarly presentations, round tables, performances featuring various representations and resonances of Paredes’s music, the launch of an online research platform, and the publication of musical transcription editions.
Participation is free of charge, including lunch and coffee breaks, and only requires the completion of a registration form. Attendance is subject to the room’s capacity limit.
