José Oliveira Martins (Ph.D. University of Chicago, History and Theory of Music). I am currently the Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies (CEIS20) of the University of Coimbra, and President of the Portuguese Society for Music Research (SPIM). I serve as professor of Music on the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FLUC) of the University of Coimbra and have previously been on the faculty of the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester and the University of Iowa. My work has been published in venues such as the Journal of Music Theory (2015, 2023), Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology (2023), Orientes do Português (2023), Perspectives of New Music (2020), Routledge Companion to Music Theory Pedagogy (2020), Musurgia (2019), Mathematics and Computation in Music (2009, 2011), Theory and Practice (2006), Portuguese Journal of Musicology (1999, 2016), among others. The research that interests me can be characterised by questions such as: how can we understand the power of engagement convoked by musical works, while attending (formally and cognitively) to their specific musical properties, their emergent musical systems and their changing (in time and space) cultural mediations? How might we model the properties of musical systems for (modern and contemporary) music given the difficulties of a lack of shared “language” and varied impact on culturally different audiences? Specifically, my work explores the theoretical modeling of musical systems in the 20th and 21st centuries, the experience and plasticity of time and musical discourse, the oral tradition of Canção de Coimbra, and more recently, the epistemology of interdisciplinarity.
