CEIS20 Scientific Coordinator is the recipient of the SMT “2024 Outstanding Publication Award”
The Society for Music Theory (SMT) has recognized the work of José Oliveira Martins (Scientific Coordinator of CEIS20 and professor of Art Studies at FLUC) with a 2024 Outstanding Publication Award.
The announcement was recently made during the 47th annual meeting of the SMT and recognized the article “Lutosławski's Mid-Century Harmony: Reconceptualizing Chordal Space in the Five Iłłakowicz Songs”, which came out in the Journal of Music Theory in 2023. The article proposes a new interdisciplinary conceptual framework (combining music, geometry, and phenomenology) for understanding harmonic movement in music. The Publication Awards Committee highlights that “the Article breaks new ground in understanding Lutoslawski’s unique use of chordal space to create colors and logical connections within the music’s progressions.” The selection process for the SMT Outstanding Publication Awards considers articles and chapters nominated in the past three years, recognizing exceptional contributions to the field of music theory by authors of any age or career stage. Currently, SMT has around 1200 members mostly from North-America.
