Issue 25 of the journal Estudos do Século XX is now available in open access, under the theme “Traces and tensions: memory, identity and power between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries”.

The twenty-fifth issue marks a significant moment in the publication’s editorial trajectory, reaffirming its commitment to an interdisciplinary and critical approach attentive to the multiple forms of reading, representation and contestation of the twentieth century.

This volume brings together five scholarly articles, two essays and two critical reviews that share a common concern: understanding how the legacies of the past century continue to shape the present, not only as historical past but also as an active field of disputes, interpretations, silences and reworkings. The twentieth century is here conceived as a set of traces in constant reactivation, cutting across memory, identity, pedagogy, science, political action and contemporary social spaces.

By proposing a critical perspective on the legacies of the twentieth century, this issue of Estudos do Século XX invites readers to think of the recent past not as a closed period, but as a “field of traces”, composed of memories, disputes, silences and reactivations. Through interdisciplinary and geographically diverse approaches, the texts gathered here demonstrate that the twentieth century remains alive in the identities we (re)construct, the spaces we inhabit, the policies we (re)negotiate and the narratives we mobilise to understand — or challenge — the present.

Between the recent past and the urgencies of the present, Estudos do Século XX thus continues to establish itself as a plural forum for critical reflection on the time in which we live.
