Presentation

Objectives

Within the context of contemporary society, technological capacity is no longer a limiting factor in the creation of information. However, the processes that enable to transform this information into useful knowledge are still constrained by multiple factors. In this course, attention is focused on how we use and integrate modern digital tools to analyse, understand and approach the world around us, guided by the following objectives: - Understand the concepts of Geographic Information System (GIS) and Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT); - Know the historical context and the evolution of the concept of Geospatial Intelligence; - Explore geospatial databases and associated metadata; - Recognise the importance of Voluntary Geographic Information (VGI) to create geospatial databases; - Apply geoprocessing methods to integrate data sources and extract information; - Categorise and symbolise cartographic objects to improve their visualisation and interpretation; - Discuss the advantages and limitations of the cartographic communication model; - Develop analysis models and use geospatial tools to respond to multicriteria problems; - Explore Machine Learning tools in the analysis of geospatial data; - Develop documents adapted to different audiences and apply critical thinking and communication skills in the transfer of geospatial knowledge;

Skills to develop

This course provides competences in 4 fundamental fields: 1. Selection and integration of Geographic Information Technologies (GIT) to create and organise geospatial data; 2. Creation of logical structures associated with analytical techniques to solve geospatial problems; 3. Production of knowledge by means of geospatial reasoning based on the understanding and prevision of the dynamics of spatiotemporal relationship of the phenomena; 4. Representation and synthesis of the produced knowledge adjusted to the decision-making context.

Access conditions

Access and entry requirements: This course is aimed at anyone interested in acquiring/expanding skills in using digital geospatial data processing tools to understand and think critically about the world in which we move.

Under Regulation No 1126/2022 for the Attribution of Incentives for the Training of Young People and Adults, published in the DR of November 21, 2022:
  • Any financial benefits that may be granted under the PRR are conditional on candidates holding a Portuguese NIF and residing in Portugal, at the time of the course;
  • Trainees who wish to repeat training for which they have not been approved and for which they have already benefited from a scholarship are not eligible for a scholarship;
  • Trainees who register in a course or initiative financed by PRR-LFA (Investments RE-C06.i03.03 – Adult Incentive and RE-C06.i04.01 – Impulso Jovens STEAM, opened by Notice 01/PRR/2021), accept that they were aware of the total/partial discount on the price defined for the course, initiative and/or attendance expenses and authorize that it be granted if its attribution is decided under the regulations in force.
