Installation "Communicating with the trees"

MedDendro Lab coordinator, Cristina Nabais, and CFE collaborator Jorge Durán, designed and implemented a pilot installation that aims to communicate with trees!

The project "Plants, carbon and climate" aims to contribute to detailed knowledge of carbon flows emitted and stored in urban areas, essential for establishing measures to reduce emissions. It thus provides a set of data to construct innovative ecological teachings committed to the national and European objectives of carbon neutrality.

This project includes installing a tree in the Mata do Treetop Walk, in Serralves, made up of sensors, that will help us understand the carbon cycle, inherently associated with the water cycle. This installation explores in real time how trees react to changes in the amount of light, temperature, humidity, wind, and how they can influence the environment around them. The installation will allow you to create a tree diary, record its growth, the amount of water it transpires and the carbon it consumes and emits, estimate its carbon sequestration potential and get to know this majestic living being better.

This installation is integrated into the Energy, Sustainability and Climate Change Laboratory, financed by the Con(s)ciênciarte Project, a Portugal Social Innovation Initiative and in partnership with the CFE.
