The Department of Mathematics offers degrees in pure and applied mathematics and computer science. We aim to train mathematicians with comprehensive knowledge and creativity, whether they seek a career as researchers, teachers, in banking or assurance systems or, more generally, in any area where interdisciplinary teams might be present.
The Department of Mathematics is also responsible for almost all Mathematics courses taught in the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, as well as for the courses in the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Pharmacy.
Research at the Department of Mathematics is developed in many current areas of modern mathematics, ranging from applied fields – such as numerical analysis, computational mathematics, statistics or optimization – to more theoretical subjects, as algebra, mathematical analysis or geometry. The scientific output of the researchers at the Department of Mathematics has received the highest classifications from the international evaluation committees held by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, the Portuguese funding agency for science and technology.
Mathematics is embedded in scientific and technological progress. The Department of Mathematics of the University of Coimbra is and will go on contributing to this progress.
