The main research focus of Genes, Populations and Diseases group is the assessment of genetic variation across populations, including both normal and disease phenotypes. The group activity covers important topics in human genetics, including:

1) genetic basis of complex diseases, including obesity;
2) molecular basis of haematological conditions, namely red cell enzyme deficiencies, HbF production in adults and venous thrombosis susceptibility;
3) effect of diseases (such as malaria) on modern patterns of genetic variation;
4) population genetics studies using Y-chromosome and autosomal variants.

The main purpose of this research group is the study of human biological variation, understood in its widest sense to include patterns of health and disease over the course of the life cycle, with a strong emphasis on social, cultural, and political-economic determinants. Four main areas of research are the focus of this group:

1) Biocultural approaches to childhood obesity: the role of political, social and economic changes in Portugal in the last century;
2) Inequalities in childhood obesity, sedentary behaviors and physical activity;
3) The impact of the economic crisis in childhood obesity;
4) Social, economic and political changes in Portugal during the 20th century and health outcomes: secular in stature and age at menarche.

This group focuses on the relevance of skeletal remains to the study of the human condition and human behavior in general. Human bone is the basis of the work here undertaken, in different populations from the Mesolithic to the Modern Era, with the aim of revealing life history at both the individual and the population levels.

We are involved with several excavations of human bones from archaeological contexts and we have collaborations with different laboratories in the University of Coimbra, the Service of Imagiology of the CHUC and with the National Institute of Forensic Medicine. The well documented, large and identified skeletal collections of Museu Antropológico of the University of Coimbra has been fundamental.

Este grupo reúne investigadores de diversas áreas das humanidades e das ciências sociais, propondo novas abordagens a questões importantes situadas na interface entre tecnociência, sociedade, e ambiente.

Existem hoje poucos aspetos da vida quotidiana, no atual contexto de globalização, que não são afetados por desenvolvimentos científicos e tecnológicos em áreas como a inteligência artificial, a ciência da computação, a medicina genética, a engenharia ambiental, ou o planeamento urbano. Estes desenvolvimentos são muitas vezes apresentados como soluções, mas frequentemente acabam por criar novos problemas e gerar novas incertezas e ansiedades. Este grupo de pesquisa procura chegar a um entendimento mais aprofundado destas dinâmicas de reverberação, investigando as questões éticas, sociais, políticas e jurídicas levantadas pela crescente influência da ciência e da tecnologia nas sociedades contemporâneas, incluindo o seu papel nos desafios civilizacionais levantados pela atual conjuntura de crise climática e ambiental.

Um dos objetivos do grupo é contribuir para uma melhor compreensão das estruturas de desigualdade que moldam a atual conjuntura de colapso, abrindo caminho para um debate mais inclusivo sobre questões de resiliência, adaptação e justiça ambiental.
