About the Jean Monnet Chair

A Jean Monnet Chair is a teaching post with a specialisation in European Union studies for university professors. Jean Monnet Chair are selected on a highly competitive basis by the European Commission under the Erasmus + programme, which includes Jean Monnet Actions.

Jean Monnet Chair are expected to:

  • Deepen teaching in European Union studies in its home institution
  • Conduct, monitor and supervise research on European Union subjects, at educational levels
  • Advise and mentor the young generation of teachers and researchers in European Union studies subject areas
  • Provide in-depth teaching on European Union matters for future professionals

About Maria Raquel Freire

Raquel Freire

Maria Raquel Freire is Associate Professor (with agregação) of International Relations at the School of Economics of the University of Coimbra and researcher at the Centre for Social Studies. She holds a Jean Monnet Chair - EU External Relations towards the East - 2016-2019. She received her PhD in International Relations from the University of Kent, UK, in 2002. She is currently director of the PhD Programme in International Politics and Conflict Resolution, CES|FEUC (FCT funded programme). She is also a member of the Governing Board of the European International Studies Association (EISA).

Her research interests focus on peace studies, particularly peacekeeping and peacebuilding; foreign policy, international security, Russia and the post-Soviet space. She has published several chapters and papers in refereed journals dealing with these topics. She is the author of Conflict and Security in the Former Soviet Union: The Role of the OSCE, Aldershot, Ashgate, 2003; A Rússia de Putin: Vectores Estruturantes de Política Externa, Almedina, 2011; editor of Política Externa: As Relações Internacionais em Mudança, Imprensa da Universidade de Coimbra (IUC), 2011; Consolidação da Paz e a sua Sustentabilidade: As missões da ONU em Timor-Leste e a contribuição de Portugal, IUC, 2015; co-editor of Competing for Influence: The EU and Russia in Post-Soviet Eurasia and of Russia and European Security, with Roger E.
