The University Development Center (CHE) is an independente public interset institution based in Gütersloh (Germany), which works in the evaluation of higher education systems. Every year it draws up a classification of German and foreign higher education institutions for university students in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles. This review system (CHE Excellence Ranking) aims to compare the selected Institutes of Research and Universities (in Europe) so that future undergraduate, masters and doctoral students can make an informed choice.
In the first evaluation of the Excellence Ranking in 2007 only the Natural Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics) were taken into account. In 2009, Economics, Political Science and Psychology were examined, a total of 2,000 research groups in 19 countries.
The Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences (in the field of Psychology) was selected to integrate a restricted group of 60 reference Universities (Excellence Group), taking into account six indicators: publications and references as research indicators and as indicators of internationalization, student mobility, teacher mobility and the existence of Erasmus Mundus Masters Course. Considering these indicators, and within the Excellence Group, the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Coimbra was awarded three stars.
