Adrião Proença

He was born on 30 August 1947 in the village of Rochoso, Guarda, where he attended primary school. He attended secondary school in Liceu Nacional in Guarda and holds a Doctorate Degree in Surgery and Orthopaedics from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (1991), where he has been a Senior Associate Professor since 1999.

He has trained in or visited seventeen foreign orthopaedic centres of recognised standing, where he presented dozens of scientific statements and papers in both national and international journals, and has organized or coordinated eighteen courses or conferences specialized in orthopaedics. He has won thirteen scientific awards.

He was Director of the Orthopaedic Department at the Coimbra University Hospitals from August 1999 to October 2005. He has held a variety of positions in the Portuguese Medical Association (1985-1990), the Portuguese Society for Orthopaedics and Traumatology (Secretary General 1997-1998 and President in 2003), and the European Hip Society (Portuguese Representative from its foundation until June 2005).

In 1982 he created and took on the management of the Bone Bank at Coimbra University Hospitals and was a pioneer in the introduction of new surgical techniques, namely in pathology of the hip and spine.
