Amadeu Carvalho Homem

He is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Letters, University of Coimbra. The primary focus of his research has been on the political theorisation of liberalism, democracy and socialism in Portugal in the modern period. He has focused on the history of Portuguese republicanism, particularly the philosophical contributions underpinning this proposal. He was made a member of the Order of Infante D. Henrique for his work on the republican phenomenon in Portugal by the then President of Portugal, Jorge Sampaio. As a cultural historian, much of his work has been dedicated to the intellectual characterisation of some of the foremost figures of the “70s Generation”. He is also scientific coordinator of Master’s and Doctorate level courses in contemporary utopias and ideologies. In addition to teaching history, he has also collaborated in courses of Media and Journalism and European Studies. He has recently begun researching in a new multidisciplinary area, applied to the study of historical iconography and imagery.
