He is a researcher, historian and archeographer.

During his teaching career he has worked in the areas of Territorial and Landscape Archeology, with a particular focus on Archeography, a subject which he created and is responsible for at the University of Paris I.

As an archeographer (and historian of Roman and Medieval surveying) he has tried to show “la part dynamique des héritages dans les morphologies actuelles et la potentialité en termes d’aménagement et de création”.

Besides this, he has been director of the journal Études Rurales since 1994 and a member of the scientific committee of Agri Centuriati - An international Journal of Landscape Archaeology since its foundation in 2004, and is also a scientific consultant to the journals Annales, Syria and Revue d’Archéométrie, among other roles.
