João Luís Alves Apóstolo

He was born in 1964 and began his professional career as a nurse in general care at Coimbra University Hospital and Coimbra Hospital Centre, later becoming specialist nurse for the care of the psychiatric and mentally ill patients at Sobral Cid Hospital.

In 2001 he began working as a teacher and researcher at the Coimbra Higher School of Nursing and at the Research Center for Health Sciences: Nursing area (UICISA-dE). He has mainly taught in the areas of research methodologies and psychogeriatry, coordinating and participating in a wide array of research projects. He has also given inumerous conference papers in the areas of mental health, psychiatry and health care and health care education.

He completed a General Nursing Course in 1988 at the Bissaya Barreto School of Nursing and in 1997 he completed a course in Specialised Higher Studies in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing at the Dr. Ângelo da Fonseca Nursing School. In 2000 he obtained a Master’s Degree in Drug-Addiction and Psycho-social Pathologies from the Escola Superior de Miguel Torga, and in the same year he also obtained at Post-Graduate Diploma in Health Services Management from the Dr. Ângelo da Fonseca Nursing School. In 2008 he obtained a Doctorate in Nursing Science from the Abel Salazar Biomedical Sciences Institute of the University of Porto.
