Luís Quintais

He was born in 1968 and is an anthropologist and Auxiliary Professor in the Life Sciences Department of the University of Coimbra. He is a researcher at the Anthropology and Health Research Centre (CIAS), working in anthropology, history and the philosophy of psychiatry. He currently works in cognitive science and the implications it has on social and human sciences, accidents and visual cultures. He has also written essays on the relationship between art and science, especially referring to bioart, and the relationship between literature and anthropology. At the University of Coimbra he teaches classes in history and social and cultural anthropology theory, visual cultures, literature and anthropology, medical anthropology and cognitive anthropology. His work has been published in both Portuguese and foreign journals. Also of note is his book, Franz Piechowski ou A analítica do arquivo: ensaio sobre o visível e o invisível na psiquiatria forense portuguesa [“Frank Piechowski or the analytic archive: an essay on the visible and invisible in Portuguese forensic psychiatrics”], Lisbon, Livros Cotovia (2006).
