Maria Helena da Cruz Coelho
She has been a Full Professor at the University of Coimbra since 1991 and is a resident academic at the Lisbon Academy of Sciences and Royal Academy of History, an academic at the Portuguese Academy of History, President of the Portuguese Medieval Studies Society, and serves on the board of management of the International Commission for the History of Representative and Parliamentary Institutions and an elected member of the Commission Internationale de Diplomatique. She is a member of the scientific councils of many national and international journals such as the e-Journal of Portuguese History (Porto, Providence), En la España Medieval (Madrid), Studia Historica. Historia Medieval (Salamanca) and Revista Anuario de Estudios Medievales. She is a researcher at the Centre for History of Society and Culture, having also directed a research project there at one point. She also served as part of the History Degrees External Assessment Committee (1998-1999) and was an FCT Examiner. She is a member of the External Assessment Committee for the Master’s and Doctoral programmes, representing the Assessment and Accreditation Agency for Higher Education (A3ES).
She received seven awards from the Portuguese Academy of History in addition to the Science Prize from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (1990). Her research has been disseminated in more than 350 national and international scientific meetings, including more than 200 articles and works on various medieval themes, especially those relating to religious, institutional, social-economic, rural world and local power history.
