First Sustainable Campus Virtual Meeting at UC
13 JUNE 2018
Last Tuesday, 12 June 2018, the Initiative “Energy for Sustainability” (EfS) of the University of Coimbra (UC) promoted the 1st Sustainable Campus Virtual Meeting (EVCS), in cooperation with other higher education institutions.
The event consisted in the organization of a virtual workshop involving national higher educations institutions interested in sharing their experiences and projects within the scope of the “Sustainable Campus”.
According to the EfS, the objective «is to convey the message “do it as you teach” among the national higher education institutions in general, in order to create a national movement in favour of sustainable campuses and to disseminate more widely the activities, the projects and the outputs in what concerns the sustainable use and management of energy.»
One of the most important characteristics of the virtual meeting format is to «have the smallest carbon footprint by avoiding the physical presence of the participants congregated in one single place. The meeting occurs in different places in the country but in a synchronized way», says the promoter of the initiative, which is part of the European Union Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW).
The opening session of the first EVCS took place in the Mechanical Engineering Department of UC, followed by a plenary session conducted by Muhammad Mazhar, expert in carbon management and researcher of the Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development of the University of Nottingham – Trent, United Kingdom.
The speaker explored the way in which higher education institutions can embed carbon management in the “Sustainable Campus” road map. He presented also the positive aspects as well as the organizational obstacles concerning carbon management.
