What do the PhD student from LAETA - Laboratório Associado de Energia, Transportes e Aeronáutica, Andreia Rodrigues, and the lecturer from CIBB - Center for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology, Vânia Moreira, have in common? They are two of the speakers at Soapbox Science Coimbra 2022, the science communication initiative that turns the city streets into the stage for the presentation of research done by women at the University of Coimbra (UC).
During the afternoon of November 23rd, the University Uptown, Café Santa Cruz and Chiado building, in the city centre, were the chosen places to hear about science done at the UC by women.
In total, there were 12 female researchers, students and lecturers from the UC who climbed on top of a wooden box and, without a microphone, shared the work they do. From artificial intelligence to the impact of geomagnetic storms on transport and energy networks, from female migration to neurosciences, the aim of the initiative was to publicise the science done by women at the University and transmit it, in a simple way, to society.
Soapbox Science Coimbra is an international initiative that is promoted, at the UC, by the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research. After an edition in an online format, it took place for the first time in person in 2022. The main goal is to "create a space for researchers to talk about science with the public in the streets of Coimbra".
