Lyric Tenor Born in Barcelona in 1940, José Carreras received the title of honoris causa from the University of Coimbra in recognition of his humanitarian work as president of the José Carreras International Leukemia Foundation, created after the tenor discovered he carried the disease in 1988.

In 1991, the Foundation would create the REDMO programme, which is the acronym for bone marrow donors registry, a programme of the utmost importance that aims to collaborate with major international bone marrow donor registration centres.
