"The figure of Juan Somavia is inextricably linked to the International Labour Organization, playing a very important role in affirming the ILO in the world system aware of its centrality, significance and importance on a global scale in the defense of a fair globalization, creating opportunities for all.

Born on April 21, 1941, he completed his academic studies in Chile, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United States, and Ecuador. In 1958 he returned to his country to study law at the Catholic University of Chile, continuing his studies in economic development in France. Lawyer by profession, he has had a long and distinguished public career at national and international levels. His extensive experience in various fields of public life, as a diplomat and academic, and involvement in social, business and civil society development organizations has contributed to his commitment to advocating decent work conditions for women and men around the world.
