A delegation from the University of Coimbra (UC), led by the Vice-Rector for External Relations and Alumni, João Nuno Calvão da Silva, and including the Director of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FLUC), Albano Figueiredo; the Deputy Director for International Relations at FLUC, João Luís Fernandes, and the Head of the International Relations Division, Silvia Silva Dias, visited Japan - Tokyo and Kyoto - from 11 to 14 July.

The purpose of the visit was to strengthen exchange programmes for students, faculty, and technical staff, as well as to promote collaboration between UC and several Japanese higher education institutions in various academic fields.

In Tokyo, the delegation met with the Portuguese Ambassador to Japan, Gilberto Jerónimo, and visited Teikyo University, which has recently established a partnership with the UC and the business community in Coimbra.

While in Kyoto, the delegation visited the Kyoto University of Foreign Studies, which has maintained an active partnership with the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra (FLUC) for over 30 years, including an annual intensive Portuguese language and culture course that brings Kyoto students to UC each year.

Following the strengthening of ties with several Japanese institutions, the delegation will attend the official opening of the University of Coimbra’s stand at the Portugal Pavilion at Expo Osaka 2025, which begins on 15 July.
