| CASA 2021 EMERGENCE | | | | | | |
| | Focusing on a post-pandemic context, ‘Emergence’ is the theme of CASA – Coimbra Architecture Summer Atelier for 2021.CASA brings forth a (re)emergence of the synchrony between creating and dwelling, based on operative design studio strategies regarding Coimbra’s urban territory and its occupations. The city of Coimbra, in its eminently public dimension, will act as an architectural laboratory, a setting for critical reflection and design, to be undertaken by tutors and participants from different geographies and cultures. 'Matter', 'Structure' and 'Edge' will be the sub-themes developed by the ateliers. | | ||||

| MATTER | | | | | | |
| | 'Matter' emerges from the dichotomy established in any urban setting between what is built and tangible or perceptible, versus its opposite, what is void, which means, precisely, the absence of any matter, whether physical or other. In this sense, 'Matter' proposes the physical or identity construction of a specific space or place. Such construction, through its matter, can consist in a more forward approach, through the conception of a design project that fills an urban or territorial void, absent of matter, or in an identitarian approach, in which matter operates at a conversion level, in a preexisting space, absent of function or uses, constructing its identity. | | ||||

| STRUCTURE | | | | | | |
| | 'Structure' emerges as a transformation of one or several ephemeral realities that shape a specific place or context. This theme excludes a merely constructive or material interpretation, as its main premise is to recall the idea of meaning of an architectural object, more profound and rooted, through its relation with the site. It proposes the conception of a structure as an active response to an object’s apparent ephemerality, a structure with a physical presence that also embodies meaning. Through its relation with site and landscape, such object becomes more permanent than any other that lacks these foundations; in this sense, there is an existing structure, between object and place, a middle ground between ephemeral and permanent. | | ||||

EDGE | | | | | | | |
| | 'Edge' emerges from the reinterpretation of certain geographic or urban phenomena through a perspective of transition and how to design, or enhance, these transitions from an existing boundary. This theme transcends an isolated approach on the boundary itself, be it a river, a bridge, a coastline, a railway line, a road, building or other. It proposes to reinterpret the boundary as an edge that creates porosity relations between two distinct dimensions of the city, landscape or territory. Therefore, 'Edge' focuses on how to establish thresholds of configurations, each of their own nature, and how to inhabit, design or seam these fragmented portions of territory. | | ||||
