UC Global | Issue 41

5 January 2017

We start the year with good news. A clinical trial with the redaporfin molecule, "born" at the University of Coimbra, has shown that it is safe and well tolerated in the treatment of advanced head and neck cancer. A group of 14 patients have tested it and one of them became cancer free.

Tomorrow, at 5 pm, the Herbarium of the University of Coimbra launches its new online catalogue. The session takes place in Amphitheater III of "Colégio de S. Bento". With around 800,000 copies, the UC Herbarium represents the largest Portuguese biological collection.

Also tomorrow do not miss the first session of "Lojas de Saber 2017", with the theme "Light and mechanisms of vision. From Euglena viridis to the bionic eye"  by Alfredo Rasteiro, an emeritus professor of the University of Coimbra. The event begins at 6 pm at the Exploratory Auditorium.

On 19 and 20 January, the arrival of the new year is celebrated with the sound of the Army Symphonic Band. The traditional New Year's concert has two sessions which begin at 9:30 p.m., at TAGV. Tickets are free and  available on 10 January.

Registrations are open for the short course "The Right of Response in Social Communication", offered by the Instituto Jurídico da Comunicação, taking place on 28 January. More information here.

The countdown to Adriana Calcanhotto's concert has already started. On 4 February the Brazilian singer will be at TAGV with Arthur Nestrovski, with the show "Das Rosas", specially produced for the 725 years of the University of Coimbra. Tickets are now available at TAGV and online.
