The International Symposia on Applications of Laser and Imaging Techniques to Fluid Mechanics
The laser is one of the remarkable inventions of the 20th century that provided the most innovative and valuable tool for experimental fluid mechanics. Technological developments in lasers, magnetic resonance imaging, synchrotron and X-ray imaging, detectors, electronics, computers, and, recently, AI tools are the source of new techniques, improved accuracy, higher spatial or temporal resolution, and new applications. Over the past 40 years, The International Symposia on Applications of Laser and Imaging Techniques to Fluid Mechanics, often referred to simply as the "Lisbon Symposia", have been persistently providing forums for promoting the interchange of new ideas on the development of advanced techniques for flow measurement and on the latest applications in the field.

CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS
All submitted conference papers are blind peer reviewed by at least two competent reviewers, and accepted contributions are included in a hardcover book with “one-page-abstracts” and a CD with full manuscripts. Both have ISBN numbers and are distributed to the conference participants at the registration desk. Also all of the conference proceedings since the year 2000 are openly accessed at the website of each Symposium from where they can be downloaded
EfS International Conference
The first Energy for Sustainability Conference, held in 2013, was theresult of efforts made by the University of Coimbra to bring together researchers, students, and stakeholders from various fields to address one of the 21st century’s greatest challenges, energy scarcity. The first two editions of the conference were successfully held in Coimbra (2013 and 2015) and were followed by the 3rd Energy for Sustainability Conference – EfS 2017 which took place in Funchal, Madeira Island, Portugal, from 8-10th February 2017. In 2019, in close collaboration with the Energy Centre at Torino, EfS 2019 was organized from 24th to 26th July. After an unfortunate mandatory gap year (2021) due to the COVID-19 restrictions, we are ready for EfS 2023. With the help of our colleagues at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Czech Technical University in Prague and Society of Environmental Engineering, we hope to organize a fruitful event! Solving the issue of energy scarcity calls for, not only the supply of clean, reliable and inexpensive energy, but also for the increase of energy efficiency at the stages of conversion, distribution and final consumption of energy. Tackling this issue requires a multidisciplinary approach. Under the theme of “Towards a sustainable and resilient future”, the goal of the EfS 2023 Conference is to generate discussion on how to create an energy sustainable future for the people and the planet by promoting the exchange of knowledge, innovative ideas and pastexperiences between participants from multiple scientific fields.
The Energy for Sustainability Initiative (EfS) of the University of Coimbra gathers faculty and researchers from R&D Units of the University of Coimbra. It manages advanced educational programs and carries out activities of an interdisciplinary nature focusing on urban systems, industrial production and energy for buildings and transport.
