Call for papers

The International Working Group on Non-Dominant Varieties of Pluricentric Languages (WGNDV) is pleased to announce its 11th conference on Pluricentric Languages and their Non-Dominant Varieties, with the title Pluricentric Languages and Power: At the Crossroads of Legacies, to be held at the Iscte - University Institute of Lisbon, Lisbon, Portugal, and online (hybrid mode) from 22 to 24 May 2025.

The event is organised by the Center for Research and Studies in Sociology at the Iscte - University Institute of Lisbon (CIES-Iscte) and the Research Center for General and Applied Linguistics at the University of Coimbra (CELGA-ILTEC).

CONFERENCE TOPICS

The conference’s topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Pluricentric languages: theory, concept, characteristics, description
  • Pluricentricity, nationalism and translanguaging
  • Pluricentric languages in the human-machine era
  • Pluricentricity in language proficiency certification and assessment
  • Non-dominant varieties of pluricentric languages – perspectives and views
  • Pluricentric languages and linguistic dehegemonisation
  • Decolonial approach to language diversity
  • Pluricentricity of ex-colonial languages and autochthonous languages
  • Official status of national varieties and language policies
  • Corpus construction for pluricentric languages
  • Language making and language (re)naming
  • Pluricentric languages and language education
  • History of pluricentric languages
  • Intersectionality in pluricentric approaches to languages
  • Pluricentricity in the intersection of arts, mediaspheres, activisms and public policy

CONFERENCE LANGUAGES

The oral presentation can be held in English or Portuguese, but all written material (slides, handouts) must be in English.


SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS

We welcome individual papers of one or more authors and panel proposals.

  1. Please make sure your abstract contains theoretical framework, your research objectives, methodology and main findings insofar as already available.
  2. Abstracts should be anonymous.
  3. Applicants may be the first author of only one accepted paper in the conference and may also appear as co-author of an additional paper or chair of a panel.
  4. Types of contribution:

    Individual paper of one or more authors
    - Presentation: 20 minutes + 5 minutes for discussion
    - Abstract (in English): 400-600 words, excluding references
    - 3 to 5 keywords

    Panel proposal
    - Panels should have a chair and up to four papers related to the same theme
    - Presentation: 20 minutes per paper + 10 minutes for discussion per paper, totalling up to 2 hours/ 4 papers. The chair of the panel is free to establish how the session is structured, for instance, all presentations first and a longer discussion session at the end or a discussion session immediately after each paper.
    - Abstract (in English): 600 – 1000 words, excluding references
    - 3 to 5 keywords
  5. Deadline for submitting the abstracts: November 30 December 15, 2024.
  6. All submissions will be peer-reviewed by two members of the Scientific Committee by January 15 31, 2025.

MODE OF PARTICIPATION

Hybrid (face-to-face AND online)

Individual papers of one or several authors and panels can be presented in person or online.

For authors participating online, their pre-recorded presentations will be streamed, with only the question and answer session held live. This is to avoid delays caused by technical problems (microphone, camera, low WiFi transmission rate etc.).


GUIDELINES FOR ONLINE PARTICIPATION

  1. The oral presentation can be held in English or Portuguese, but all written material (i.e. the slides) must be in English.
  2. In order to avoid delays caused by technical issues with microphones, cameras, internet connections, etc., please record your presentation beforehand and send it to the Organising Committee by April 30, 2025.
  3. On the day and time of your presentation, the OC will stream your pre-recorded presentation. Please make sure to be online on this day and time as you are expected to participate live in the 5-minute discussion/Q&A session following the streaming of your presentation.
