Route from Coimbra to Madrid

This section is a challenge: the most direct route from Coimbra to the east is across mid range mountains and the train line which offers the best connection in Portugal (Linha Beira Alta) is suspended for improvements until at least late 2025.

Unpaved roads could be unsuitable for certain types of bikes and/ or tires with wet conditions. Consider taking a train if available or the main road.

This route was validated in April 2025.

Here we present an alternative route, including cycling in Portugal and Spain, with train trips from Coimbra and to Madrid:

Total bicycle distance: 184 km
Total up gain: 2,750 m
Total train distance: 528 km
Days: 5
