Diploma – a document certifying the awarding of an academic degree (Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD) or the completion of a non-degree course, which in general consists of a Course Completion Certificate.

Formal Diploma - an additional or alternative document to the diploma, certifying the Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree (issued in a basic or in a traditional version).

Formal PhD Diploma - an additional or alternative document to the diploma, certifying the PhD Degree (issued in a basic or in a traditional version).

Formal Tenure Diploma – document certifying the Tenure Track Position (issued in a basic or in a traditional version).

As per articles 39 and 40 of the Decree Law no. 74/2006 of 24th March, and the subsequent republications, a higher education diploma may be granted for:

  • a) completion of a bachelor’s degree course with a minimum of 120 credits;

  • b) completion of a master’s degree course with a minimum of 60 credits;

  • c) completion of a PhD course;

  • d) completion of another non-degree course.

NOTE: In order to ensure the validation of the identification of the Degree Holders according to the official documents (for example ID Card, Citizen Card), after 1st January 2016, the given names are written in Portuguese.

The aforementioned diplomas are represented by a document issued by the legal and competent authority of the higher education institution. The document mentioned above is issued along with the diploma supplement.

In the same Decree-Law, article 49 also states that holding a degree or diploma is attested by a degree certificate registration which is generically called diploma, and, for students who also request it, by:

a) a Diploma (Carta de Curso), concerning Bachelor's and Master’s Degree;

b) a Formal PhD Diploma, (Carta doutoral), concerning PhD degree.

To sum up, a student who completed a higher education degree, and after paying the corresponding fees established by the Table of Fees and other Charges of the UC, may request the following documents:

Diploma - document attesting a degree or completion of a course, written in Portuguese, on letter-headed paper of the UC, A4 size and with the University’s embossed seal on the printed version. €20

  1. Written in Latin, except for given names(1), and in Portuguese;

  2. Special paper with the UC insignia, the Rector's seal and signature of the UC’s administrator;

  3. Delivered inside a metal tube with the engraved UC’s logo.

  1. Written in Latin, except for given names, and in Portuguese;

  2. Special paper with the UC insignia, the Rector's seal and signature of the UC’s administrator;

  3. A silver foil seal affixed to the diploma along with a ribbon of the colour of the respective Organisational Unit(1);

  4. Delivered inside a metal tube with the engraved UC’s logo.
