Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
You should not register for an academic year without completing the previous one. Therefore, you have to wait for the registration and the exam, and only after the release of the grade at Inforestudante, you may register for the subsequent academic year.
You will be automatically notified of the new registration deadline by email. Meanwhile, you may register, even on a provisional basis, for the practical classes of the curricular units you want to attend in the new academic year.
However, if you are not registered, then you do not have a special situation or status entered in the system, which means that you cannot benefit automatically from that situation at InforEstudante. You should contact the services of your Faculty regarding this situation.
You should wait for the release of the grades since you can only register after all the grades have been released by the Professors and accepted by the Academic Management Services (SGA).
If this happens after the end of the normal registration deadline, you will receive a reminder (by email message) informing that you must formalise your registration within the following 7 days. This will be your normal deadline, and you only be subject to penalties beyond its end.
Check also the question: How to register beyond the normal deadline?
No, because the delay does not depend on the student.
(Check the previous question)
If the normal registration deadline has already passed:
- Access InforEstudante and click the Registrations link, as it is usually done within the deadline.
- After choosing the curricular units, a message will be shown with the amount of the fee for an academic procedure carried out beyond the deadline and the registration will be sealed.
- If you are registering within the first 15 days after the end of the normal deadline, paying a fee of €15 is mandatory. If you are registering between the 16th and the 30th day after the end of the deadline, the fee is of €30.
- The payment must be made by means of ATM references, Paypal or in person at the Cash Office Counter in one of the Academic Centres. Usually the payment will be immediately visible in your platform’s current account.
At the end of the 30 days beyond the normal deadline, the registration becomes subject to the submission of an exceptional request by means of the payment of a fee of €50, and the decision is requested from the Faculty’s bodies. It should be noted that the payment of the fee does not ensure the acceptance of the request.
If you are waiting for grades to be released, you can register within the consecutive seven days after the release date of the last grade, free of any charge, and you will be notified by means of InforEstudante.
Although you are regularly registered for the academic year, the payment of the fee for an academic procedure carried out beyond the deadline is mandatory. Therefore, a debt concerning the fee you owe the University was generated, which will prevent the issuance of any document such as your academic record, completion certificate or another document.
No, you cannot. You can only register for the subsequent academic year:
1) after making all the payments concerning the previous academic year; or
2) if you have requested an agreement for paying late tuition fees and it has already been accepted
The students who are entitled to this agreement may request it at InforEstudante by selecting the request type “Payment plan for tuition fee debt settlement” in the menu “Academic Service » Requests”.
Yes, if you are not carrying out an enrolment (that is, a registration resulting from an application to the UC).
The Identification Document is validated in two crucial moments:
-
until the end of the civil year of the enrolment (check information at Submitting Documents at the UC);
-
at the moment of issuance of a certification document, including the diploma.
The registration limits and the rules for curricular year transition are established by each Faculty in accordance with the Academic Regulation of the UC, and they cannot be exceeded.
- There may be occasional situations of adjustments to that limits (in order to accommodate the changes in ECTS credits of some optional curricular units provided in the current academic year) or other exceptional situations.
- If this is not your case, your situation must be subject to an appraisal, which means you can go to the Academic Centres in order to obtain information or send your request by email using the Online E-mail Form | Académicos UC.
In order to seal your registration and finish it, you have to remove curricular units until the total number of ECTS credits falls to the limits that are applied to you.
Check further information at Registration Rules.
Yes, you can. Students may opt to make a semester registration by choosing only curricular units of the 1st or only of the 2nd semester. However, the registration is always carried out at the beginning of the academic year.
► In this case, you only pay 50 per cent of the total amount of the tuition fee.
As a matter of course, you can register for optional curricular units beyond the ones required to complete the course, provided that you do not exceed the limit of registration ECTS credits established for your course. Nevertheless, this is an option that depends on the course and Faculty you attend.
► Please note that ALL the curricular units you complete in your course will account for the calculation of the final grade.
Yes. You can register for new curricular units up to a maximum of 75 ECTS credits IF in the academic year in which you enrol and register you are also a finalist student.
► This situation happens, for example, after a change of course/institution, readmission or access by means of a Bachelor’s Degree obtained before the Bologna Process.
Yes. You can register for new curricular units up to a maximum of 84 ECTS credits IF you meet all the undermentioned conditions:
- you completed all the curricular units for which you had registered in the previous academic year, with a minimum of 60 ECTS credits, and
- the weighted average of all the curricular units until the end of that academic year is an A in the European scale of comparability (accessible by means of the Record at Inforestudante, in the details of each assessment).
What is the European Scale of Comparability of Classifications?
It is a relative scale based on percentiles, divided in five classes of positive classifications, identified by letters from A to E, which correspond to the percentiles 10, 35, 65, 90 and 100 respectively, of the best students who complete a course and a negative class (F) which corresponds to the students who fail to complete a course.
Yes, you can. You can register for individual curricular units of the 2nd cycle, provided that you are also registered for all the curricular units required to complete the 1st cycle and the ECTS credits limit, established for your course, is not exceeded.
Yes, you can. These surveys are not mandatory, although they are extremely important for the assessment of the University concerning all its aspects. Furthermore, the contribution of students is an important issue to improve the curricular units, the courses and the UC.
After interrupting your studies for an academic year, you have to apply for Readmission within the deadlines established, in order to return to the UC and to your course.
For further information, check the webpage of Applications.
All students who complete a Bachelor’s Degree at the UC (1st Cycle) have to apply to the Master’s Degree (2nd Cycle), even if it is a Continuity Master’s Degree Course.
Check the deadlines on the website of Applications.
The concept of freezing/suspending enrolment does not exist, but the concept of withdrawing exists. If you do not register for a certain academic year, your enrolment will be considered interrupted.
- If you withdraw during a certain academic year, you can register normally for the subsequent academic year.
- If after interrupting your studies, you are more than one academic year without registering, when you want to return to your studies you have to apply for Readmission within the deadline that will be established.
No. The annulment takes place only according to situations provided for by the Law. What the student will be able to do is withdrawing his/her registration.
Regarding the cycles of studies (Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD Degree Courses), if the withdrawal takes place within the deadlines established, published and disseminated to the Students in the beginning of each academic year, you will be exempt from paying the subsequent tuition fee instalments.
► Check the webpage referring to these deadlines at Academic Deadlines.
The Certificate becomes available immediately after you seal your registration, in the option “Documents” at InforEstudante. You only have to select your enrolment and click “Generate New Document Request”. Then scroll down, and at “Multipurpose Certificate” click “Generate request” and a PDF file containing the document will be generated.
The change in your registration can be carried out by means of InforEstudante without paying any fee within the deadlines established by the Academic Management Services (SGA) at Academic Deadlines.
The registration deadlines for the practical classes are published by the Faculties or the departments regarding the Faculty of Sciences and Technology (FCTUC), and they are also responsible for the management of the schedules.
► You may also check them at Inforestud@nte in the option “ACADEMIC SERVICE » REGISTRATIONS CLASSES”. If they are not established yet, please consult the Students Assistance Services at your department or faculty.
Yes, even when there is only a registration for the Thesis. In order to have a bond to the UC and a PhD course, the registration in the beginning of each academic year is mandatory. Only under these conditions a PhD student may benefit from the resources of the UC and the supervision of his/her thesis’ works.
The usual registration deadline in 2019/2020 is the same for all the students in the UC who registered in the previous academic year and it is usually between the end of August and the middle of September. Nonetheless, there may be PhD courses with specific characteristics, which may imply other deadlines. Therefore, you should check the notice "Registration for the .../... academic year" on the main webpage concerning registrations with different deadlines.
All the academic procedures, including the registration to attend classes in the academic year, are carried out at InforEstudante. The system recognises the registration as being on a full time or part time basis, asking the PhD student to confirm and accept his/her registration on that basis.
The registration may be annual or semestral, and within each, you may choose between the full time or the part time registration in accordance with the following table:
| Registration System | Registration | Conditions | % of Fees |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full time | Annual |
|
100% |
| Semester |
|
50% | |
| Part time | Annual |
|
60% |

|
30% |
In accordance with no. 2 of Article no.16 in the Academic Regulation, the registration on a part time basis is subject to the registration for curricular units, including the thesis, that account for:
- in the academic year, up to and including 30 ECTS; in the semester up to and including 15 ECTS.
The Thesis is usually a multiannual curricular unit, that is, a unit whose activity covers more than an academic year. Typically, it ranges from 120 ECTS (2 academic years) to 240 ECTS (4 academic years).
Please note: Some PhD Courses comprise multiannual curricular units that accompany the Thesis (follow-up or supervision seminars, scientific methodology, among others).
It depends on the availability of that option in the Faculty/Organisational Unit responsible for the PhD Course. If it is available, it is possible to register on a part time basis, counting only the corresponding ECTS credits.
In order to confirm it, please check the notice of opening that establishes the guidelines of your PhD course in the academic year concerned »»
| The number of ECTS counted in order to obtain the minimum value after which you can deliver your Thesis and request its public defence depends on your registration every academic year: |
| Registration System | Registration | Conditions of the registration for the Thesis | Counted ECTS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full Time | Annual |
|
100 per cent of the year |
| Semester |
|
50 por cent of the year | |
| Part Time | Annual |
|
50 per cent of the year |
| Semester |
|
50 per cent of the semester (1/4 of the year) |
After obtaining the minimum number of ECTS credits (equivalent to the minimum time to carry out the Thesis works) established in your PhD Thesis guidelines. This value depends on your registration every academic year (check the table and previous question).
Please note: In order to check the counted ECTS credits, click on the icon “Details” that is at the end of the text line concerning your thesis in the present registration.
The biggest advantage is related to the fact that it enables you to begin your PhD course later in the academic year. For example, if you are waiting for the issuance of your visa or if you have been admitted to/placed in the UC in the 3rd or the Extraordinary Application’s Phase.
In these cases you should pay attention to the date of your registration and consider the possibility of registering only for the 2nd semester because you will have more time to decide what to do before the tuition fee instalments are generated.
► For further information, please check the webpage concerning the "Registration for only one semester" »
Typically, students should register on a part time basis if, for any reason (for example, student-workers) they are unable to proceed their studies at the same pace as other students registered on a full time basis. Thus, they can take twice as long to accomplish the PhD course and pay lower annual fees.

The Financing Law establishes the application of the expirations system to all 1st cycle students (including students in the 1st cycle of the Integrated Master's Degree) and therefore the Academic Regulation of the University of Coimbra (RAUC) establishes the expirations system in the University of Coimbra.
In accordance with the RAUC, the students who do not obtain a minimum number of ECTS credits in a given period of time are subject to expiration. However, there are some special situations that may have an impact on the period of time concerning the application of the expiration system.
The special situations must be submitted in the academic year to which they refer by means of a request to be submitted at InforEstudante.
The expirations system applies to Bachelor’s and Integrated Master's Degree students, if they have not obtained a Bachelor's Degree yet. If a registration in an academic year is detected concerning a student covered by the expiration system, the registration will be annulled.
At InforEstudante, the student always has information available about the risk of expiration. The part-time (or full-time) registration will only be possible in an academic year in which the expiration does not happen, and the student must manage his/her registrations according to his/her assessment in the curricular units.
If your registration expires, you are not allowed to register for two consecutive semesters for the cycle of studies you are attending or any other cycle of studies to which you intend to change.
After that academic year, you may apply to readmission. The readmission that takes place within the applications period established by the UC does not have the limitation of the number of places, and the registration calculation concerning expiration is restored to zero. In the academic year of the expiration, you can apply to attend isolated curricular units within the deadlines and according to the conditions established for that application. The awarding of credits to these isolated curricular units may be done after the readmission.
The registration only for one of the semesters is counted as 0.5 for the purposes of expiration.
After accomplishing the interruption of two semesters imposed by the expiration, a student can be readmitted without the limitation of the number of places and with the registration calculation restored to zero.
► Further information about expirations at Expiration of Registration.
In accordance with the regulation of the University, a student is on a part time basis registration when he/she is registered for up to 30 ECTS credits in the whole academic year, or up to 15 ECTS credits in a single semester.
Therefore, the registration for the courses of the UC takes place on a full time or part time basis in accordance with the choices that the student makes at the time of the registration. This situation is verified automatically at InforEstudante during the registration for the curricular units the student wants to attend in the academic year.
At InforEstudante the option PART TIME or FULL TIME is available in one of the first registration menus so that in the subsequent menu the student may be able to check what the limits of ECTS credits are concerning one or the other situation.
Yes, there are. The registration on a part time basis is conditioned on the registration for a number of curricular units lower than or equal to 30 ECTS credits in the academic year, or lower than or equal to 15 ECTS credits in a semester.
► Further information about the registration on a part time basis at Part-Time Registration
