The Center for Industrial Ecology (CIE) at the University of Coimbra, represented by doctoral student Jade Müller Carneiro, participated in the 5th edition of the European Sustainable Phosphorus Conference (ESPC5), held in Lérida, Spain, from 8 to 10 October 2024. Organized by the European Sustainable Phosphorus Platform (ESPP) and the BETA Technological Center, the conference addressed topics such as the recovery and recycling of phosphorus and other nutrients (e.g. nitrogen), precision and organic agriculture, and eutrophication.

The CIE presented three works developed within the scope of the Horizon 2020 WalNUT project, an oral communication and two posters:

- Md Rubel, Edward Someus, Jade Müller-Carneiro, Fausto Freire: “Life Cycle Assessment of an Innovative Technology for Dairy Wastewater Treatment with the Production of Phosphorus-rich Fertilizer
- Jade Müller-Carneiro, Luís Dias, Carla Rodrigues, Fernando Burgoa Francisco, Francisco Corona, Fausto Freire: “Assessing nutrient security and replacement potential of novel technologies for wastewater nutrient recovery
- Ana Cordeiro, Jade Müller-Carneiro, Joana Bexiga, Md Rubel, Bart Saerens, Lennert Dockx, Fausto Freire: “Life Cycle Assessment of an Ammonia Stripping-Scrubbing Pilot Technology for Nitrogen Recovery from Urban Wastewater

The WalNUT project focuses on new technologies for nutrient recovery from domestic and industrial wastewater. The CIE contributes to environmental sustainability assessments (LCA) and socio-economic assessments of these innovative technologies.
