Last week, CIE researchers Jade Müller and Ana Cordeiro participated in the month 42 General Assembly of the WalNUT project (funded by Horizon 2020) held in Odense, Denmark.

On March 19th and 20th, 2025, the WalNUT project General Assembly (GA) took place in the city of Odense, Denmark. The GA was hosted by the Department of Green Technology of the University of Southern Denmark. The EU-funded Horizon 2020 WalNUT (www.walnutproject.eu) project aims to redesign the value and supply chain of nutrients from wastewater and brine, creating innovative solutions for nutrient recovery. The Center for Industrial Ecology contributes to the WalNUT project with life cycle assessment (LCA), socioeconomic and techno-economic assessments of novel nutrient recovery technologies tested at pilot scale.

During the second day of the meeting, an LCA seminar took place, and the CIE researchers presented the progress of their work:

  • LCA of an Ammonia Stripping-Scrubbing Pilot Technology for Nitrogen Recovery from Urban Wastewater (Ana Cordeiro, Jade Müller-Carneiro, Fausto Freire)
  • LCA of an Innovative Technology for Dairy Wastewater Treatment with the Production of Phosphorus-rich Fertilizer (Md Rubel, Jade Müller-Carneiro, Fausto Freire)
