Professor Manuel Gameiro da Silva, Director of the Association for the Development of Industrial Aerodynamics (ADAI), has been awarded the REHVA Professional Excellence Award in Science in Istanbul.

This marks the first time that this international award has been given to a Portuguese scientist. Manuel Gameiro da Silva, who is also a Full Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEM) at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC) and coordinator of the Energy for Sustainability Initiative (EfS) at UC, was nominated for the award by the Coordination of the HVAC Specialization of the Portuguese Engineers' Association, the entity representing Portugal in REHVA.

REHVA, headquartered in Brussels, is the Federation of European Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Engineering Associations, representing a network of over 100,000 European engineers. Over the past 19 years, the Professional Excellence Award in Science has recognized 28 scientists. Each year, up to two individuals can receive this prestigious European distinction.

The jury selected this year’s sole award recipient in recognition of his outstanding scientific achievements and contributions to improving energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality in buildings. The award was presented by REHVA President, Professor Catalin Lungu, during the federation's General Assembly.

Also held in Istanbul was the Climamed 2024 conference, a joint event organized by HVAC engineering associations from Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, and Turkey. Among the invited speakers were FCTUC professors Manuel Gameiro da Silva and Adélio Gaspar, the current director of DEM. Additionally, ADAI researchers presented three scientific papers, making the University of Coimbra one of the most represented institutions at the event.
