Abstract
Thematic Objective: Creation and dissemination of educational resources that promote knowledge and remembrance of the 25th of April, particularly within the scope of citizenship education.
With reference to both the present and the future of Portuguese democracy, the overarching goal of this project is to foster research, deepen knowledge, and encourage critical debate surrounding the Revolution of 25 April 1974 — particularly concerning its antecedents and consequences — thereby reinforcing its relevance and presence across diverse regions of the country. To this end, the project foresees the development and sharing of a set of educational resources, based on original sources, duly certified in terms of authority and content. These materials are intended to be used and reused, either independently or under guided instruction, by the target communities. It is argued that, within an appropriate framework and structure, these varied uses and reuses — beyond commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 25 April Revolution — will serve not only to revitalise collective memory through evocative objects, but also to provide essential tools for accessing knowledge. This, in turn, will support the development of autonomous and independent interpretations of the revolutionary movement, while bringing archives and their sources closer to the communities they pertain to. In doing so, the initiative promotes an engaging and practical approach to both learning and civic practice.
Thus, the project will make an effective contribution to the ongoing debate and public discussion of these themes, which, given their undeniable relevance, are increasingly prominent on the national agenda. Furthermore, it will provide a valuable opportunity to enrich, enhance, and disseminate significant elements of the extensive documentary heritage housed at the 25 April Documentation Centre of the University of Coimbra — a unique collection in the national context. Certified educational resources will be used to promote a sound understanding of the historical message and to support the innovative production and dissemination of knowledge, with particular emphasis on the key programmatic dimensions of the historical process in question: decolonisation, democratisation, and development.
