Abstract

Exploring Idanha-a-Velha since Antiquity through Virtual Reality (Digital Applications) is one of the central proposals of the project “iDanha: New Links, New Creative Historical Readings.”

This initiative includes an innovative approach to local tourism and culture, featuring the production of a documentary on the history of the ancient city and the organisation of a community festival in this historic village of the municipality of Idanha-a-Nova, which is classified as a significant Portuguese National Monument.

The project is led by Pedro C. Carvalho, Professor of Archaeology at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra, and was one of the winning proposals in the 2023 edition of the Programa Promove – O Futuro do Interior, an initiative by the “la Caixa” Foundation, in collaboration with BPI and in partnership with the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

This is an interdisciplinary project, bringing together a research team from CEIS20 (Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies) with expertise in various fields, including Armando Redentor, Ricardo Costeira, Sara Dias-Trindade, Ana Teresa Peixinho, and Clara Almeida Santos.

One of the key aims of the project outputs — particularly the documentary — is to demonstrate the scope and strategic value of applied interdisciplinary research, contributing to the broader development of CEIS20’s research agenda.

Coordinated by the University of Coimbra (III-CEIS20), the project involves institutional partnerships with the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of NOVA University Lisbon, the Municipality of Idanha-a-Nova, and the Friends of the Parish of Idanha-a-Velha Association (Liga dos Amigos da Freguesia de Idanha-a-Velha). It will be developed in close collaboration with local communities, as well as with local economic and cultural stakeholders and businesses.
