Countering Oppositional Political Extremism through Attuned Dialogue: Track, Attune, Limit
Duration
01/01/2023 - 31/12/2026
Abstract
OppAttune (2023-2026) is a transnational project, funded by the European Commission through Horizon Europe, with 17 institutions from 15 countries. Our aim is to track the evolution of extremist ideologies and protectionist policies, develop an innovative tuning model and test a set of interventions, at national and transnational level, that limit the spread of extremism.
OppAttune aims to develop an Attunement Model, which translates into a set of multi-level tools (micro, meso and macro) that respond to the project's objectives of tracking, attuning and limiting political extremism in different national and local contexts.
The macro level consists of the legal, historical and economic factors that shape the parameters of citizens' lives. The meso level centres on the influence of media/online spaces, the role of local democracies, and citizens' engagement with political binomials. Finally, the micro level explores how individuals interact with extremist narratives and their ability, as dialogical citizens, to foster political debates.
The various tools implementable through the Tuning model will be evaluated and made public in 2026. Over the course of that year, OppAttune will present short-, medium- and long-term strategies, as well as policy recommendations, on how to limit extremist political narratives.
