Conditions for admission
1. The following are eligible to apply for the PhD in Contemporary Studies:
a) Holders of a Master’s degree or its legal equivalent;
b) Holders of an undergraduate degree with a particularly relevant academic or scientific curriculum recognised by the Scientific Board of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research of the University of Coimbra as demonstrating the ability to complete this cycle of studies;
c) Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum recognised by the Scientific Board of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research of the University of Coimbra as demonstrating the ability to complete this cycle of studies, and applicants must have obtained a course assessment mark of at least 14 (on a 20-point grading scale);
2. The recognition referred to in points b) and c) of the preceding paragraph only gives access to the cycle of studies leading to the doctoral degree and does not confer on its holder the equivalence of an undergraduate or master’s degree, or the recognition thereof.

1. Course assessment (Weighting 40/100) |

1.1 Academic curriculum (30%); 1.1.1 Final average of Bachelor's degree (50%); 1.1.2 Master's degree final average (50%); 1.2 Professional curriculum (30%). The duration, nature and relevance of the professional duties carried out in the area of the study cycle in question will be considered; 1.3 Scientific curriculum (40%). Candidates' participation in congresses, seminars, research projects, number of articles published, awards and similar elements in the scientific area of the study cycle are weighted. |

2. Interview (Weighting 40/100) |
|
2.1 Communication and oral skills (20%); 2.2 Knowledge of English and/or other language relevant to the PhD work/publication (10%); 2.3 Motivation and interest (30%); 2.4 Ability to analyse, think critically and articulate research perspectives (40%). Jury: Dina Sebastião; Vânia Rodrigues; other lecturers appointed by the DEC Coordination. |
| 3. Writing sample (Weighting 10/100) |
| Two writing samples should be submitted, preferably of a scientific nature (this could be a chapter or segment of a master's thesis). Other formats (book chapters, articles, blog entries or equivalent) are also considered. The samples must not exceed a maximum of 20 pages each and must be dated. |
| 4. Motivation for interdisciplinary research (Weighting 10/100) |
| You must submit a brief summary of the themes/problems you are interested in/want to develop and how you consider the interdisciplinary perspective. The summary should not exceed 2000 words, including a list of up to 10 bibliographical references. |
Required documents
- Degree certificate or diploma with final average or other equivalent document. This must include a certificate proving that the course units taken have been passed, with the respective marks (transcript or diploma supplement). (MANDATORY except in the case of a course taught at the University of Coimbra);
- Certificate or Diploma of completion of Master's degree with final average or other equivalent document. It must include a certificate proving that the course units taken were passed, with the respective marks (transcript or diploma supplement). (MANDATORY unless it is a course taught at the University of Coimbra);
- A certificate of any other courses you may have taken, with the programmes and workloads of the curricular units taken and the respective grades (transcripts), if you wish to apply for credit. (MANDATORY, except if it is a course taught at the University of Coimbra under the Bologna Process - after 2007/2008);
- A qualification certificate issued by the institution awarding the highest degree, stating the average grade obtained and the grading scale. (MANDATORY only for foreign degree holders whose certificate does not contain the average grade);
- Curriculum vitae. (MANDATORY);
- Identification document. (MANDATORY for foreign applicants only);
- Interdisciplinary Research Motivation Text. (MANDATORY);
- Writing sample. (MANDATORY).
NOTE: If the above documents are in a language other than Spanish, French or English, they must be translated into Portuguese by a translator recognised by the Portuguese diplomatic mission.
Successful candidates will be required to submit the original certified documents at the time of enrolment and registration.
