About
Description
UC-ACOI is a scientific resource center that provides a multidisciplinary scientific research environment and state-of-the-art equipped facilities to support research on marine ecosystems, human and environmental health, aquaculture, and marine biotechnological applications. Located in Central Portugal, the UC-ACOI ensures access to a wide range of inshore and costal ecosystems, namely the Mondego estuary and adjacent coastal areas that include protected areas under the Natura 2000 and Ramsar conventions. Access to these ecosystems is granted by a research vessel, technical equipment, and specialized facilities. The experimental facilities are available for treatment and processing of samples from multiple origins, and the technological platforms are outfitted with cutting-edge equipment for analysing and characterizing biological compounds for biotechnological applications. Access to biological resources that include a unique collection of microalgae and cyanobacteria and a biobank of marine organim tissues.

Research infrastructures
EMBRC-PT: EUROPEAN MARINE BIOLOGICAL RESOURCE CENTRE - PORTUGAL
EMBRC.PT is a distributed research infrastructure with nodes in Faro, Horta, Porto and Coimbra where ACOI is located. This infrastructure aims to allow researchers to study aquatic biodiversity in its habitat, in tanks and in laboratories with the latest technologies. It is the national node of the European Marine Biological Resources Center (EMBRC). Increase in scientific activity is expected to boost the development of technologies and products with a positive impact on the regional and national economies.
pt-mBRCN/MIRRI-PT: Portuguese microBiological Resources Center Network / Microbial Resource Research Infrastructure – Portugal
Pt-mBRCN is a national network of microbial culture collections that covers different taxonomic groups and brings together experts from different fields. Pt-mBRCN aims at better microbial management of national resources and the development of research in all areas of Life Sciences.
