Confucius Institute of the University of Coimbra successfully organises its first ‘Taichi & Chikung Workshop’
Eastern wisdom lights up the Portuguese University Campus
On 13 June, the first Taichi & Chikung for Health Workshop took place at the Confucius Institute of the University of Coimbra, an initiative that combined ancient Eastern wisdom with modern concepts of well-being. This inaugural event in the series of workshops attracted around 20 participants from different local backgrounds, all taichi and chikung enthusiasts, creating a warm and concentrated atmosphere to begin a journey of harmony between body and mind.
The theme of this first workshop centred on the ‘General Principles of Exercises for Preserving Health in Traditional Chinese Medicine’, with guidance from Professor Ye Xiao, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute and an experienced specialist in the field. With a clear and accessible approach, Professor Ye presented the fundamental principles of ‘working lightly and often’, ‘adapting to individual constitution’, ‘following the rhythm of the seasons’, ‘nourishing body and spirit together’ and ‘choosing what you like and persisting’, demonstrating their practical relevance in everyday life for a healthy life.
After the theoretical exposition, the long-awaited practical part followed. The participants watched a demonstration led by Professor Ye of an exercise called the Morning Energy Raising Exercise and had the chance to try it out for themselves. To the gentle rhythm of the movements, those present immersed themselves in the sensory experience of chikung, feeling the flow of energy and body serenity provided by the practice.
"This kind of workshop is extremely beneficial for our body and mind. We hope the Confucius Institute will organise more sessions like this!" commented one of the participants enthusiastically. This opinion was shared by many others present. The workshop proved to be an educational, practical and engaging activity. Scheduled to end at 7.10pm, the event went on until nearly 8pm, fuelled by the enthusiasm and enriching exchanges between the participants.
The success of this first workshop lays a solid foundation for the development of the Taichi & Chikung for Health series promoted by the Confucius Institute of the University of Coimbra. It represents an important step in promoting traditional Chinese culture and healthy lifestyles among the local community. More themed sessions are already in the pipeline that will bring new inspiring content.
