2023 Edition

On March 27 and 28, 2023, SerQ – Forest Innovation and Competences Centre and the University of Coimbra held a Workshop on Challenges and Opportunities in Wood Construction at the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Coimbra (DEC-UC).

This event was the result of work carried out under the Eguralt Project, co-financed by FEDER through the INTERREG SUDOE Program, and was attended by more than 200 professionals from the construction and forestry sectors in Portugal, Spain and France.

This is a sector that has seen a constant paradigm shift, contributing to the global challenge of combating climate change. Various measures have been implemented on a global scale for more sustainable construction, taking into account the reduction of carbon emissions and the use of natural raw materials from sustainable and renewable sources. Wood occupies a privileged position among the various materials used in construction.

On the first day, the workshop covered various topics on the use of wood in architecture, including: wood construction - architecture combined with sustainability; dimensioning and execution of wood structures; detailing, durability and monitoring in wood construction and the presentation of case studies in wood structures, highlighting the latest innovations and developments in the sector at national and international level.

On the second day, the event featured a series of presentations dedicated to medium-height timber construction, namely: Timber construction - architecture combined with sustainability; a session dedicated to the EGURALT Project, where the main results obtained during the project's development period were presented; and a series of Practical Reference Cases for timber structures. The various breaks provided a space for networking between the various participants.
