Biografia

Francisco Portugal e Gomes holds a degree in Architecture from FAUP – Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto, obtained in 1989. During his studies, he was taught by, among others, Professors Fernando Távora, Alexandre Alves Costa, Domingos Tavares, Carlos Guimarães, Manuel Mendes, and José Gigante. He earned a PhD in Architecture from DARQ – Department of Architecture of FCTUC, University of Coimbra, in 2019, with the final classification of Approved with Distinction and Praise, unanimously awarded by the jury. He received an Honorable Mention in the "André Jordan Award 2020", Doctoral Theses / Scientific Articles category, for his thesis Survey on Portuguese Regional Architecture: a contribution to the understanding of the causes of the ‘Portuguese house’ problem. In the context of professional practice, he collaborated between 1988 and 1996 with the studios of architects Jorge Gigante, Francisco Melo, José Gigante, and João Álvaro Rocha. He is the author of projects and works published in several magazines, books, and catalogues, including: Premis FAD, ARQ-INFAD, Barcelona, 2000; Obradoiro, no. 33, Official College of Architects of Galicia, 2008; Contemporary House Design, Daab Publishing, Cologne, 2008. He has participated in the following exhibitions: FAUP Student Project Exhibition, as part of the first issue of Unidade magazine, 1989; Travelling Exhibition of the Portuguese Order of Architects, Geração 90, 2000; Exhibition of works submitted to the João de Almada Prize, 13th Edition, 2010, Casa do Infante, Porto. Among other awards, he received an Honorable Mention – Technological Project, Academy Bridge-Museum, Venice/Italy, International Public Competition, 2006, and Distinction of Praise from several Honorary Members at the WA Awards, 1st Cycle Winners, World Architecture Community, UIA, 2008 – for Casa Milhundos, Penafiel (1996–2002). He is also the author, among others, of the articles Whoever Draws Is Still in Paradise, Vesper magazine No. 10, PARD, Università UIAV di Venezia, 2024, and Contribution to the Malagueira Neighbourhood, CIPA – International Congress for Architectural and Landscape Heritage – Malagueira, CHAIA, University of Évora, 2022. He has conducted and edited around twenty interviews to date, including with: Nuno Teotónio Pereira (2009), Manuel Tainha (2010), Pedro Vieira de Almeida (2011), Victor Mestre (2014), José Carlos Loureiro (2015), Bartolomeu Costa Cabral (2023), Joaquim Vieira (2024), and Mário Krüger (2024). He was scientific coordinator and co-organizer, together with Rodrigo Hölzer e Brito and Filipe Quaresma, of the International Meeting The Significance of Professor Mário Krüger’s Contribution to Architectural Research, held at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, 2024. He was a guest assistant at FAUP (1995–1997), visiting lecturer in the Architecture and Urbanism course at Escola Superior Gallaecia (2005–2007), and assistant professor at DAU – Department of Architecture and Urbanism, Universidade Lusófona, Lisbon (2019–2024). Since 2025, he has been an assistant professor at DARQ – Department of Architecture of FCTUC, University of Coimbra.
