Biografia

Joana Maia graduated in Architecture in 2005 from the Escola Superior Artística do Porto (ESAP). Since then, she has been engaged in professional practice, developing projects both nationally and internationally. She is a member of the Ordem dos Arquitetos, registration number 14083. She attended the Master’s Course in “Methodologies of Intervention in Architectural Heritage” at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP), obtaining a Specialization Diploma in 2008. In 2009, she was awarded a Master’s degree by the same institution (FAUP) with the dissertation "Adobe Construction in the Parish of Requeixo, Aveiro: Guidelines for Its Preservation as Cultural Heritage." In 2011, she obtained the Diploma of Advanced Studies in the Doctoral Program "Architectural and Urban Culture" from the Department of Architecture at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (DarqFCTUC). She holds a PhD in Architecture with the thesis "The Intrinsic Dimension: Validity of the Concept of Proportion in Portuguese Architecture from the Mid-20th Century Onwards." She has presented papers at conferences and published around a dozen peer-reviewed articles in specialized national and international publications. Her current research focuses on themes related to the Compositional Process and the importance of Geometry and Drawing in architectural thought and practice. Since 2019, she has been an Invited Assistant Professor in the Geometry course of the Integrated Master’s in Architecture at the University of Coimbra (DarqFCTUC). Since January 2021, she has been a member of the Board of APROGED – Association of Geometry and Drawing Teachers, serving as Vice President.
