Biografia
João Mendes Ribeiro was born in Coimbra in 1960. Graduated in 1986 from the Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto. PhD in Architecture from Universidade de Coimbra in 2009, where has been lecturing on Architectural Design since 1991, in the Departamento de Arquitectura da Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia. Architécti Prize 1997 and 2000 (Lisbon); Highly Commended, AR awards for emerging architecture, 2000 (London); Diogo de Castilho Prize 2003, 2007, 2011, 2017 and 2021 (Coimbra); FAD Award 2004 Interior Design and 2016 Architecture (Barcelona); Gold Medal for Best Stage Design, Prague Quadrennial 2007; IV Enor Prize, Portugal category, 2009 (Vigo); VIII BIAU 2012 (Cadiz) and X BIAU 2016 (Sao Paulo); RIBA Award for International Excellence 2016 (London); Prémio Nacional de Reabilitação Urbana 2017 and 2021 (Lisbon); BigMat Award 2017 (Luxembourg) and XII Architecture Secil Award 2020 (Lisbon). Was shortlisted for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies Van der Rohe Award in 2001 and 2015, finalist for the RIBA International Prize 2016 (London), selected for the DOMUS International Prize for Restoration and Preservation 2017 (Ferrara) and for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies Van der Rohe Award in 2001, 2005, 2011, 2013, 2015 e 2022. In 2007, was presented with the AICA Award for Visual Arts and Architecture given by the International Association of Art Critics and the Portuguese Ministry of Culture for his body of work. In 2006 was distinguished with the Comenda da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique by the President of Portugal.
