Biografia
Paulo Providência is an Architect graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of Porto, and Associate Professor at the Department of Architecture of the University of Coimbra, where obtained PhD in 2007. Is the local coordinator of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in Architecture, Landscape, Archeology, with the Universities of Rome Sapienza, Federico II of Naples, Athens Technician and University of Coimbra, since 2019. Runs a Design studio dedicated to interventions in heritage sites. Has been Design Studio Guest Critic at: KU Leuven / Gent, EPFL Lausanne, ETH Zurich, KTH Stockholm, UCD Dublin, SAUL Limerick, Sapienza Università di Roma - Valle Giulia, NTUA Athens, FAUP Porto, among others. Is a researcher at the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra, having been coordinator of the Cidades Culturas e Arquitetura Centre between 2014 and 2019. Research interests are on architectural design processes, buildings and healthcare facilities, as well as in the relationships between architecture, anthropology, archeology and landscape. Among publications, the following should be highlighted: co-edition of the journal Joelho 4 - Crisscrossing Architecture and Archeology (2011), Joelho 6 - Teaching through Design (2013), Joelho 9 - Reuse of Modernist Buildings: pedagogy and profession (2018), and Joelho 11-12 Archeology, Landscape, Architecture: Crossings of Reciprocal Learnings (2021), as well as the books A Cabana do Higienista, Coimbra, e|Darq, 2000; Leprosaria Nacional, Porto, Dafne, 2013; Architectonica Percepta, Zurich, ParkBooks, 2016. Co-editor, with Pedro Baía, of collection of publications dedicated to the architectural production of Bartolomeu Costa Cabral, Nuno Portas and Manuel Correia Fernandes, published by Circo de Idéias. Dominican Convent and Cultural Centre nominated for the 1994 Mies van der Rohe prize; APOM Prize, Memory of the Amazon Exhibition, 1994; “Madeira na Arquitectura” Award, restoration and expansion of the Figueiredo Church, Braga, AIMMP, 2005; Enor-Portugal Award ex-aequo, Vila do Conde Health Centre, 2007; National Leprosaria - Short list of the 2014 FAD Critics Award.
