Synopsis

The first issue of the second series of Em Cima do Joelho is published in the context of the project Women in Architecture, presented during the XII Cultural Week of Coimbra, which took place under the theme Public Cause – The Public and the Media. The aim of this project is to acknowledge, analyze, and celebrate the increasing presence of women in the University and, in particular, in the field of Architecture. This is a public fact that shapes a new order in disciplinary practice: could the quantitative and qualitative presence of women renew the relationship between architecture and Portuguese society in the contemporary context? Given the scarce recognition of women in the history of Portuguese architecture - partly due to their relatively limited presence - it is possible to observe a gradual shift that has taken place in recent years. This project seeks to revisit the presence of women in 20th-century architectural history; showcase the work of newly graduated female architects as evidence of this presence and vitality; and discuss the public presence and contribution of women in various areas - architecture, history, criticism, and research. Beyond the academic community, this project also aims to engage professionals and a broader audience by addressing the role of women in contemporary society.
