The Colleges of Jesus and Arts of Coimbra (1542-1759) analyzes the construction process of these two Jesuit colleges, built in the Upper Town of Coimbra over more than two centuries. The College of Jesus was the first Jesuit college in the world, founded in 1542, just two years after the Society of Jesus was officially established in Rome. The neighboring College of Arts, built from 1568 onwards, housed the Arts and Humanities courses, which were preparatory for all the major faculties of the University.
While documentary records are relatively well-known, an architectural study illustrating—through drawings—the evolution of this important complex over time and space was still lacking. This is precisely the study that Rui Lobo presents in this book, with a foreword by Professor Alexandre Alves Costa.
