This opens a space for publications promoted by the Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra. It is “inaugurated” with the publication of the competition projects for the reconversion of part of the Alta (Upper Town), an initiative supported by the Rectorate of the University of Coimbra. The authors of the projects are professors from the Department: Alexandre Alves Costa, Fernando Távora, Gonçalo Sousa Byrne, and Raul Hestnes Ferreira. This book presents the drawings and descriptive reports exactly as they were submitted to the competition jury. In addition to the jury’s official report, the publication includes an introductory text by the President of the Scientific Committee, José Carlos Teixeira, a contextual piece by Vice-Rector Teresa Mendes and Camilo Cortesão, and two critical essays by Domingos Tavares and Jorge Figueira, proposed by the Department’s Scientific Committee. The drawings and texts lead us through the recent and distant history of this place—and toward its future; (perhaps) not by coincidence, it is the site where architectural education was institutionalized at the University of Coimbra.
